Then I figured out how to create one - but had to save and close it and then go back in to finish entering information. I thought creating a new citation was clumsy - I kept getting lost and closing the screen before I actually managed to create and save a citation. I suppose I could find a use for a Citation Name field, but with over 10,000 citations to adjust, why would I bother? I assume they were doing their best to accommodate different ways of writing sources. Tried to clean that up, deleting Citation Name entries, but they miraculously reappeared. Finally ran a report and discovered that when they were identical, Citation Name did not appear on the report, Page Number did. Couldn’t figure out why and it irritated me. BUT, in upgrading, the program duplicated the information in the RootsMagic 7 Page Number field into a Citation Name field in every citation. The sources were interesting - it was great to be able to see in the main source screen where each source had been used. I had to close the program and reopen it. Any work I did after closing the box did not save. If the program got an error code, I eventually realized that closing the message box was not sufficient. If the program froze, which it did rather frequently, I had to use Task Manager to close the program. The report would only do endnotes, there was no option to do footnotes. The little arrow at the right that indicated there were options was missing. I spent an hour figuring out how to create a narrative report that listed all of the descendants of a person, something that was quite easy to do in version 7. At least the scroll bars in the index worked. But what if I wanted to use the index to jump up and down between unrelated people? If I had already typed a name, I had to clear that before starting over. The index of people was static - when I wanted to find someone, I had to click into a field and then type the name.

I assume I would eventually get used to it, but if there are multiple spouses of multiple spouses, I can envision losing sight of the person I wanted to deal with. Clicking a spouse, I would suddenly see that person’s spouses, not the spouses of the person I was editing.

I had to adjust the size of the area to see them, which reduced the size of the index. Although the concept of having spouses listed on the left side of the screen was good, in reality, I had trouble with it. The pasting was not always in the place I had put the cursor and sometimes not all of the material pasted.
ROOTSMAGIC 8 BETA CODE
Copying and pasting into notes added formatting code that I then had to go back and manually remove. I would type an addition to an existing note and found it did not always save. I had to grab them with the mouse and move them up and down. I found that scroll bars for lists of children did not work. Upgraded to RootsMagic 8 from 7, pleased that I would have to do less clicking to accomplish data entry.
